How would you like to have enough energy to do all the things you dreamed of doing when you retire? Don't think it's possible? Think again! One of my favorite nutrients can re-invigorate you and help you turn back the clock by 20 years or more.

In the last health alert, I told you how to boost glutathione levels to reduce toxicity. Now researchers are finding that one of those nutrients - alpha lipoic acid - can indeed rejuvenate your energy levels.

Dr. Tory Hagen, a researcher with the Linus Pauling Institute, recently spoke at a conference hosted by Oregon State University. In his speech, he said his researchers found that alpha lipoic acid "tends to restore levels of glutathione, a protective antioxidant and detoxification compound, to those of a young animal. It also acts as a strong anti-inflammatory agent, which is relevant to many degenerative diseases."

Dr. Hagen also said that their studies have shown alpha lipoic acid can literally reverse aging. They tested almost 100 detoxification and antioxidant genes in mice. When given alpha lipoic acid, "their cognitive ability, behavior, and genetic expression (of these genes) are comparable to that of young animals. They aren't just living longer, they are living better - and that's the goal we're after."

The researchers found that lipoic actually "kick starts" declining function in cells. It helps them recover the functions that were more abundant in younger animals.

They even found that alpha lipoic acid repairs cellular "signaling." That's a process that tends to break down in older blood vessels. It reduces mitochondrial degeneration. As the engine that drives energy in cells, mitochondrial degeneration is a primary cause of aging symptoms.

With age, glutathione levels naturally decline. When that happens, older animals become more susceptible to both free radicals and other environmental toxins. Alpha lipoic acid can restore glutathione function to near normal. And the expression and function of other genes seems to come back to life as well.

"We never really expected such a surprising range of benefits from one compound," Dr. Hagen said. "This is really unprecedented, and we're pretty excited about it."

Alpha lipoic acid is one nutrient that I just love. It's one of the few stand-alone supplements I take regularly. This nutrient may do as much as or more - dollar-for-dollar - than anything on the market. Higher glutathione levels will directly improve your detoxification processes not only for heavy metals but also other chemicals. And, protecting your mitochondria is crucial to good health and high energy levels. The slower they age, the slower you age.

Consider taking 300 mg per day. I'm often asked about the more expensive R-lipoic acid. I think it's great. But I've had awesome experience with the standard form. And my colleague and alpha lipoic acid guru Burt Berkson, MD, recently said he feels the same. I feel confident that you'll do just fine with the less-expensive version. You can get more information on this stunning nutrient in Dr. Berkson's book Alpha Lipoic Acid Breakthrough, which is available at Amazon.com.
