By now, you probably know that all serious medical conditions require a combination of conventional and natural medicine for the best outcomes. Cancer is the clearest example of that rule.
To consult only with a natural doctor or only with a conventional doctor when you have cancer is to play with fire. You need both for a successful outcome.
Unfortunately, patients often don’t realize this until it’s too late. Dieneke Ferguson’s case illustrates this. Fortunately, she found a DIY treatment that saved her life. It could save yours, too.
Dieneke was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a blood born cancer that can be very difficult to treat. With one year to live, Dieneke found a way to beat multiple myeloma after conventional treatment had completely failed. Her remarkable case was written up in the April 2007 British Medical Journal.
It all started back in March 2007. At 57 years old, Dieneke was diagnosed with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance, better known as MGUS. MGUS is very common. Worldwide, approximately 3.2% of Caucasians and 6.5% of blacks have it. MGUS is a condition that’s not cancer per se, but left unattended, it often turns into multiple myeloma. And here’s the problem. When her doctors discovered the MGUS, the first thing they did was – nothing. That’s because conventional medicine does not have a drug for MGUS. So, as a result, after a year of sitting around and waiting, Dieneke’s MGUS had developed into multiple myeloma. And like so many people do who don’t know any better, even then she did not consult a natural doctor.
Instead, she ran straight to a conventional oncologist. And without any detoxification, liver support, nutritional management, diet therapy, metabolic therapy, stress management, or immune therapy, she immediately had three rounds of chemotherapy. She also underwent four failed attempts at a stem-cell transplant. Not only did she become sick from the treatments, she also lost her memory for three days. All of these treatments failed. And shortly after she had begun the treatments, two of her vertebrae (back bones) collapsed. As a result, she lost three inches of height.
At that point, Dieneke’s future looked bleak, as no other conventional medical options were available. According to statistics, her life expectancy was, at the very best, one more year. Then, a marvelous thing happened.
Without any help from her doctors, all by herself, Dieneke learned about the anti-cancer effects of curcumin from another myeloma patient when she was searching blog sites on the Internet. She had nothing to lose, so without any medical advice, she started taking high doses of curcumin equal to 8 grams per day. This is the protocol used in a 2007 curcumin-myeloma clinical trial at the MD Anderson Cancer Research Center in Houston, Texas.
In that study, the MD Anderson researchers looked at how curcumin affected NF-kB, STAT3, and COX2 pathways. These are transcription factors that control cellular growth. In cancers, their activity is almost always increased. This enables the cancers to grow and spread without any control. Big Pharma has been trying for years to develop a patented drug that will successfully counter these factors. So far, they have been unable to make that drug.
But, here’s the good news: We already have the compound. It’s curcumin.
Unfortunately for Big Pharma, curcumin is a natural compound. That means that it can’t be patented, and is therefore useless for profit. According to the authors of the MD Anderson study. “Curcumin has been shown to potently suppress the activation of these transcription factors [NF-kB, STAT3, and COX2] in cultured cells.” So, given that, they set out to find out how curcumin affected patients with multiple myeloma.
They gave a group of multiple myeloma patients from 2-12 grams of curcumin per day for three months. In addition to the curcumin, they gave the patients a black pepper extract called bioperine. That’s because bioperine helps curcumin to be absorbed better. Even at these very high doses, the authors commented, “Treatment with curcumin and bioperine has been well tolerated, with no significant adverse events.” And not only were the treatments safe and well tolerated, the results were impressive.
The herbal combination decreased NF-kB activity by 77%, STAT3 activity by 69%, and COX2 activity by 66%. There is no drug that can come close to this. They concluded, “This is the first report to indicate that curcumin, a highly safe agent, is bioavailable and can downregulate NF-kB, STAT3 and COX2 in multiple myeloma patients. These findings suggest a potential therapeutic role for curcumin that can be further investigated either alone or as a modulator of chemo-resistance in combination with other active agents.” This is a landmark study. But, despite that, because it is natural and not patentable, don’t expect your oncologist to even know about it, much less use it.
So, what happened to Dieneke? Her paraprotein levels, a blood marker for multiple myeloma disease activity, gradually decreased. And her dangerously low blood counts steadily improved. And thanks to the power of natural medicine, five years later she was reported stable with no progression of disease and normal quality of life. She even carried the torch in the 2016 Rio Olympics!
In short, thanks to curcumin and Dieneke’s determination to look beyond what her oncologist knows, she is still alive and well today!
I have a patient whom I have been working with for seven years now who has MGUS, just like Dieneke had. But unlike Dieneke, my patient did not wait for it to turn into multiple myeloma. Instead, she has been taking very high doses of curcumin ever since she learned about it. The result has been that her MGUS has never progressed into multiple myeloma. And, in fact, her blood tests have not only not worsened, as would be expected, but they have actually improved.
For the record, Dieneke took Doctor’s Best C3 Complex curcumin with bioperine. You can get it online in 1,000 mg capsules. If you have been diagnosed with MGUS, start off with one per day and, as your stomach gets used to it, increase up to four capsules, twice a day. Have your blood tests taken after you have been on the 8 gram dose for three months. You should see the effect by then. And, if you need to, you can safely go to higher doses.
These two cases illustrate four things. First, do your homework. Don’t expect that your doctors know everything in the world about every diagnosis in the world. We all have much to learn. Two, no matter what medical diagnosis you have, especially if it’s serious like cancer or an auto-immune condition, make sure that you are working with both conventional and natural doctors. You will need them both. Three, remember this: When a doctor tells you that there is no cure for what you have, what he/she is really saying is that if there is a cure, he/she doesn’t know about it.
And lastly, don’t think that curcumin is only for multiple myeloma. The problems with NF-kB, STAT3, and COX2 activity happen with virtually every cancer there is. No matter what treatment I’m giving my cancer patients, I always add in curcumin. Curcumin comes from the herb turmeric. So, many doctors prefer to give turmeric. Whether one is more effective than another is a matter of debate.
