One of the scariest things you’ll ever experience is watching someone suffer a seizure. While more adults are suffering seizures, the worst seizure disorder of all is still a condition called Dravet syndrome.
Dravet syndrome is a complex childhood epilepsy disorder that is associated with seizures that respond very poorly to drugs. And to make matters worse, unlike most seizure disorders, kids with Dravet syndrome often die.
So, wouldn’t it be great if there was a natural solution to this terrible problem? It turns out that there is. This solution is not only effective for Dravet syndrome but also for every other kind of seizure disorder out there.
I have told you before about cannabidiol (CBD). CBD is a component of the cannabis (marijuana) plant. It’s also found in the hemp plant. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is another component in cannabis, CBD does not make you high. It has no side effects. And it is legal in all 50 states (though the Drug Enforcement Administration is trying to change that). You can even buy it online. There are many remarkable qualities of CBD, but the one I want to focus on now is its ability to calm down the nervous system.
All of our nerve and brain cells have receptors for CBD. That means that when CBD interacts with these receptors, the response is that the nerve cells calm down and become much more stable. This action of CBD makes it very helpful for insomnia, depression, anxiety, ADD, and, of course, seizures. Just a few months ago, I reported on a study that showed that CBD is very effective in the more typical childhood seizures. In this study, the researchers tried it on children with Dravet syndrome. And the results are enough to bring tears to your eyes for these poor little people.
The researchers looked at 120 children and young adults with Dravet syndrome. All of them had seizures that would not respond to any medication. They gave half of them a placebo pill. They gave the other half CBD. All of the children continued to take the medications that they were already on. The study went on for 14 weeks. Here’s what happened.
Of the children on CBD, 43% of them had the number of their seizures cut in half. That’s a huge response! Of those, 5% of the kids became completely seizure-free on CBD. None of these findings happened with any of the children on the placebo. According to lead author Ingrid Scheffer, “Until now, there has only been anecdotal evidence, but now we have scientific evidence proving that cannabidiol [CBD] is effective in severe epilepsy.” There was, however, one problem with the CBD.
The researchers gave the kids a huge amount of CBD – 20 mg per kilogram. This is close to seven times the maximum dose that’s usually used. And since standard CBD is fat soluble, it’s not surprising that very high doses can create some absorption symptoms. So, while the side effects of CBD are virtually nonexistent, some of the kids in this study experienced diarrhea, vomiting, fatigue, fever, sleepiness, and abnormal results on liver function tests. Here are my thoughts on this study.
First of all, this offers some long-needed hope for all of the kids who suffer from this very difficult seizure disorder. Second, the dose that they used may have been much more than was needed. It’s very likely that while some people will need such a high dose, others will not. In this study, the authors did not try individualizing the dose. Also, if the researchers had used water-soluble CBD, they might have discovered that they could use much smaller doses and have fewer if any, side effects.
Third, none of the side effects were serious. This is unlike the potentially life-threatening side effects that can happen with some of the anti-seizure medications commonly used. Lastly, don’t forget that these children had one of the most difficult forms of epilepsy there is. Children with less resistant forms should do much better, even on lower doses.
Although there are several forms of CBD available online, as I have said before, you can’t be sure if what you’re buying is a quality product. That’s why, just to be safe, I recommend CBD Gel, which you can find at www.cbdformulations.com. I know the scientist who produces this CBD, and I have verified that he analyzes every batch to make sure it’s contaminant-free and contains the amount of CBD it claims to contain. This particular product is also a nano version of CBD. This means that, unlike standard CBD, it’s water soluble. The fact that it’s water soluble means that it’s better absorbed. And even in very high doses, it’s much less likely to cause the side effects seen in this study.
